Normally, one would never expect to find a pair of cubic zirconia stud earrings on an attendee at the Golden Globe Awards. Of course, this year, with the Writers’ strike in full swing, things are far from normal. Due to the strike, the group that hands out those awards does not even have a Guild writer who can write material for a master of ceremonies. Still, the awards are scheduled to take place. In light of that fact, one writer has used the following article as a way to speculate about the connection between the peacock and cubic zirconia stud earrings.

Does someone at NBC have a friend or relative who sells cubic zirconia stud earrings? NBC has ruled out the possibility of having a “private” presentation of the Golden Globes Awards. NBC made that decision despite an awareness that no celebrity would be available to walk on the Globe’s traditional red carpet.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA had realized that the celebrities in line for an award would want to support the members of the Writers Guild, the striking screen writers. Based on that realization, the HFPA had suggested the “private” Awards presentation. Yet the HFPA did not take into consideration the contractual agreements that guaranteed the creation of some sort of broadcast from the Golden Globe Awards.

When they suggested the “private presentation,” the officials at HFPA overlooked the contract between HFPA and NBC. Both the HFPA and Dick Clark Productions are obligated, according to a written contract, to give NBC an opportunity to broadcast the Golden Globe Awards.

What will the public see this year, when NBC does broadcast those Awards? The public will certainly not see a lot of celebrities wearing real diamonds. Maybe NBC plans to have substitute Awards’ recipients appear, wearing cubic zirconia stud earrings and other cubic zirconium jewelry.

Maybe NBC will appeal for assistance from the program sponsors. Adidas, Alberto Culver and Papa John’s Pizza promise to pay for all the ads broadcast on January 13th, the scheduled night of the Golden Globe Awards. Maybe those businesses somehow stand to profit from an increased demand for cubic zirconia stud earrings.

Maybe the jewelers in Los Angeles County plan to hire more workers, workers who know how to make jewelry like the cubic zirconia stud earrings. If the jewelers in L.A. County do hire more workers, that should lower the unemployment rate in L.A County. In fact, that would probably represent the first time when the Writers strike led to creation of a new job.

Until now, many of those employed in the entertainment industry have been losing their jobs. Without writers to create material, there has been little available with which to entertain audiences. As a result, make-up artists, stage and screen prop suppliers and even catering services have experienced a decline in their source of income.

Now the Writers Guild hopes that the Golden Globe Awards will manage to showcase the depth of the Guild’s support among the general Hollywood community. It therefore seems ironic that the need to broadcast the Awards introduces a need for some substitute Awards recipients. Any one of those substitutes might choose to wear cubic zirconia stud earrings.

If many substitutes make that decision, then there should be a spike in the number of job openings within the community of jewelry makers.
